National Poetry Slam in St. Louis

I'm planning on taking in my first Nationals ever with a group of friends but we are all pretty intent on not breaking the bank in order to do so. There are three of us who will be traveling down from Southern MN. If anyone has any advice on monetary short cuts we could take it would be more than helpful. I've also heard that volunteering is a great way to make the most of the week, any thoughts on this from veterans of this competition? Much love to all.

Boycott NPS 2004. Why? ClearChannel is sposnsoring it, and let's look at some recent history of our glorious sponsor:

1. They have donated large amounts of money to the Republican Party and George W. Bush for President.

2. They pushed Michael Powell into pushing forward rules that would allow a single corporate to own stations in 40% of the national market, and also limiting ownership of community FM stations.

3. Post 9/11, they banned music from being played by their stations, from John Lennon's "Imagine" to Rage Against the Machine's "Sleep Now In the Fire". Let's repeat that: THEY BANNED MUSIC.

4. After making various anti-Bush comments, the Dixie Chicks songs were banned from being played by Clear Channel's country stations.

5. You know why radio now sucks? Because they play and promote the most bland, milquetoast crap for fear of offending anyone.

Look at items 3, 4, and 5 specifically. How many poets do you know who write/perform about similar themes such as John Lennon, Dixie Chicks, and Rage Against the Machine. How many poets might be DENIED the modern patronage of fandom should ClearChannel ever get their hooks into poetry slam?

I'm not going to Nationals this year, I didn't event try. I wouldn't go. But I'm offering to members of Team Mesa to refund their plane ticket if they can't get their money back.

For NPS/PSI to take money from ClearChannel is in direct contradiction to the mission of poetry slam. It's an abomination. It's selling out - and not buying in.

in the dark about that one, thanks for the heads up.
